Australian researchers seem to have just disproved a long held assumption about men and their testosterone levels. In the past, it was widely thought that these levels dropped inexorably with age, leading to an inevitable lowering of the sex drive. But the latest findings suggest this only happens in men whose general health is getting worse. The fact that this lowering of the libido is so widespread implies something about society. There must be a lot of older blokes out there whose health is declining for various reasons. Of course men are notorious for not looking after themselves. And they do seem to get worse in this regard as the years wear on. But it can't just be that. Perhaps it is related to men's career progression. They do tend to do less physical work the older they get. That is understandable, since some jobs are done far better by fit young blokes. But this means that they often end up in office jobs working quite long hours. These hours get longer, and more stressful if they are climbing up the career ladder, too. Subsequently they end up stressed out, sedentary and overweight, with no time to exercise. No wonder their health deteriorates! 1 Comment Mick Hucknall's apology to women 12/04/2010
Mick Hucknall has apologized to the countless women he slept with at the height of his fame. This is quite a remarkable thing for a couple of reasons. Firstly, it's odd that any bloke would feel guilty about it - particularly one who is a performer. They are more egocentric than most people, after all. And secondly, it's quite amazing that he managed to actually do what he now feels so ashamed of. He's hardly handsome. But then it just goes to show the power of celebrity. And he's certainly a talented singer with a very distinctive voice. Clearly a lot of young women found these qualities powerfully attractive. It would be nice to think that sex and violence were two completely separate drives. But the sad fact is that they are often linked together. The obvious example is in the case of rape. Then there is the fact that so many serial killers are driven by bizarre sexual fantasies as much as by anything else. Of course the vast majority of people aren't sex criminals. Still, lots of couples do indulge in fantasies that involve violence. Most of the time they don't go any further with them. But sometimes they act them out, which seems to have happened in a crime committed early this year in Melbourne. The alleged perpetrator of a knifing in Fitzroy said that planning the attack on his lover's husband had improved his sex life with the woman. Financial gain also appears to have been a motive in this case. But it seems the sexual thrill the lovers were getting from their fantasies had a lot to do with the crime ultimately being committed. It's not just love that can make people do crazy and destructive things. Sex can too! Hugh Hefner remains unrepentant 08/01/2010
Hugh Hefner has been interviewed by Melbourne's Herald Sun newspaper. He will certainly have angered feminists yet again with his comment that "women are sex objects". Still, his unreconstructed attitudes to women certainly haven't made him any less popular with the many beautiful girls he spends his days and nights cavorting with. His obvious hedonism hasn't done any harm to his health, either! Even his worst enemies would have to admit he's in very fine shape for a man in his eighties. An online poll has indicated that Kiwi women are the world's most promiscuous. The reasons for this are manifold, it seems. One view is that it's something to do with New Zealand men being bad at picking up women in bars, meaning that the women have to be more sexually aggressive themselves. Another is that it's because of the rise internet dating. Sex.com domain up for auction 03/11/2010
"Sex" is one of the most searched-for terms on the internet. Which is why the domain name "sex.com" is so valuable. It is currently up for auction, and is expected to fetch an astronomically high price, quite possibly a world record. Cloe to a year ago the murder trial of Amanda Knox had only just started, yet it was already garnering a lot of media interest. That clearly had a lot to do with her sexual attractiveness. Recently, as the trial culminated with a guilty verdict, the story has been all over over the mainstream media. Hers is also one of the most searched for names on Google. Another sexy young siren called Jaimee Grubbs - who was involved in a much less serious moral transgression involving Tiger Woods - also makes that list. Why beautiful women like nerdy men 10/31/2009
Most people find the idea of a sexy, beautiful women in a relationship with a geeky, physically unimpressive man as kind of strange and unlikely. I think that's why a show like Beauty and the Geek manages to draw so many viewers - they find it kind of weirdly compelling, like a bearded lady in a sideshow! But the reality is that there are quite a few nerdy, plump and just plain ugly men who consistently manage to attract sexy stunners half their age. And here's an interesting article about how they manage to do it. It seems that their intelligence, power and confidence are major factors. The women also believe that these men are a safer bet in terms of commitment, since - unlike hunky young guys - they will tend to get less sexual offers from beautiful women. But knowing what men are like regardless of their looks, I think this is probably a false hope. Book says women don't really like sex! 09/08/2009
Over the last few decades pro-sex feminists have made a real effort to convince people that women want sex just as much as men, and for the same reasons. But the authors of a just released book argue that this is not true, and that many of those old beliefs about women not liking sex, and only having it to manipulate men, are actually true. If they're right, this is very depressing! Dating by genes 06/24/2009
