His young bride - who is around forty years his junior - obviously appreciated all the attention. But I feel sorry for the husband. How is this guy going to maintain this level of luxury and lavishness. If he doesn't, she might start to get bored!
Every now and then a hugely rich older man marries a beautiful and much younger woman in a flurry of media attention. The latest example is the highly publicized wedding of millionaire Dr Geoffrey Edelsten and Brynne Gordon at Melbourne's Crown Casino, which cost several million dollars.

Up until now Tiger Woods seemed to have a perfect life. He was by far the best in the world at what he loved to do, with more money than most people even dream of and a beautfiul wife and kids. How could he not be perfectly, blissfully content with his lot?
But if the rumours about why he had his recent car accident are true, then he definitely wasn't happy, and was having an affair. It seems the urge to stray - particularly in young men - seems almost impossible to contain, no matter how conducive the circumstances are to fidelity. Just recently a dating site burst onto the scene and annoyed countless people the world over with its requirement that to be accepted you must be deemed beautiful by members who have already joined. The same site is now provoking the residents of just one country - Britain - with a statement that its residents are among the ugliest in the world.
It's not a very nice approach to creating publicity. But it certainly seems to be working. As websites with huge membership bases and massive revenues get even bigger, they often join forces with other big sites. Facebook and Twitter are two examples. You can see them pretty well everywhere now.
One dating site that is following this approach is Match. It's now partnered with eBay Australia, giving it access to 8 million users. Hard to believe, but the decade known as "the noughties" is almost over now. Here's an interesting article about the many changes that occurred in people's sexual behaviour over that time.
Recent research has shown that Australia's dating sites are putting a dent into the nation's sex industry. It seems that because people can now easily arrange casual meetings for sex, men are spending quite a bit less on sex workers.
Whatever other conclusions can be drawn from this data, it certainly shows that these sites do actually do what they say they do! Not long ago there was a political sex scandal in NSW, with Labor luminary John Della Bosca admitting to an affair with a young woman called Kate Neill. While the scandal broke months ago now, it's still heavily invoked in reporting about the politician.
Now, in South Australia, there are allegations that the Premier Mike Rann was having an affair with a former employee of Parliament House. Like the Della Bosca scandal, this will go on for a while, I think. It might have some impact on Rann's electoral chances, but I doubt it will be great. Australians are generally pretty tolerant of the private shenanigans of public figures. A new dating site created solely for beautiful people has proved to be quite controversial, with a lot of mentions in the mainstream media. I'd imagine that the site owners would be very chuffed about this, since there are so many new dating sites nowadays all trying to get exposure. It must be hell trying to get ahead of the pack.
Needless to say, much of the commentary has been critical of the site's flagrant elitism. Not surprisingly it has been satirized already in a parody suggesting that there's now a polar opposite to the stunners' site. Now the severely aesthetically challenged can meet others like them through "Absolute Uggos". |
